The plan is to have more user-oriented news once there's time. Reformatting
the mails is on the todo list.

This is a tricky one. The problem is that identi.ca is terrible and
unfriendly now. If there was a social.debian.net running GNU Social I'd
switch to that in an instant (even considered setting one up myself but I
currently don't have the braintime). It's a short term fix, one that I'd
like to resolve but currently there are more important things to be done.

Yep. I'll probably come up with a couple of mockups for this that we can
bikeshed over.
