how to force debian8 to start to text mode

 Dear sir/ Miz       I start to use Debian8 because it is quicker than ubuntu. Sometimes I would like to force it to text mode.    On starting page, I change the parameters of "ro quiet" into "ro quiet text", "text", "ro text" and so on, but it doesn't work. Would u please inform me how to do?thksyours,Jiang
