Look, you apparently have some kind of a problem with either your harddrive or
your controller. It is unlikely that either of that could have been caused by
KDE.

As someone else pointed out, you should check what else have been upgraded
besides KDE. Perhaps a newer kernel version that includes a driver that does
not work well with your IDE controller?

Anyway, you should have been more careful when upgrading to experimental and
untested packages of CVS code on your production machine. Unless you are
willing to take the risk of having a broken configuration, you should not use
any unstable (let alone unofficial) packages at all...

Therefore, you now have to find a solution to two problems: your hdd and your
KDE installation.

Whatever happened to your hardware configuration is, I fear, beyond this
list's competence and interest.

Your working KDE environment should be possible to restore by downgrading all
of the packages either back to orth's versions or to any other version that
is provided by Debian. In the meantime, you can use some other WM/DE if
you're not comfortable with the command line.

If you wish to investigate the KDE problem any further, try running it from an
xterm in a bare X session - that way you can watch the messages it is going
to output (and post the errors here).
