The drive is built to automatically fix these sort of sector problems by remapping the sector onto a reserved section of the platter. In removing KDE and reinstalling a kernel you may just have been lucky and the drive might have done just this. Unfortunately, theres only a certain amount of times the drive can do this (the reserved area is limited in size) so I would still start looking for a new drive.....
