See, since I tried Arts when KDE 3.0.0 hit the ftp servers, and it sucked my 
CPU cycles. Later I upgraded to KDE 3.1.0, and Arts' CPU usage still sucked. 
Later came 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and the same. Even later, I started using 
orth's and Andreas' CVS snapshots, and artsd still sucked. I installed CM's 
packages and... guess what?  Arts sucks, right now.

IMHO, you should tell XMMS to use /dev/dsp, "killall artsd", and start 
listening yto your music.
