A kind member of this list suggested that I try a floppy-based bootloader, 
GAG43, which I have done. For right now it does exactly what I want: lets 
me use Linux on my second hard drive without messing around with MBRs and 
other scary things. I'll get my Linux sea legs first, and then deal with 
more sophisticated ways to do a dual boot.
