Problem writing sone charaters with OO

Even with the new 1.1.1 version of OO, I can't write characters such as ~ ë Ï 
â Ô , possibly many others. I get all the characters I want in such a simple 
editor as Kwrite. For a contender to Wor(l)d fame, it's rather surprising.

Is this problem Knoppix specific? (I don't use OO with Slackware.) Is there 
any way around it?
