I shall test this asap, once I've cleared a partition to install 3.4 to
- wasn't able to resize a spare partition this weekend as I thought I
could :(  And then I'll *finally* get round to updating the wiki on
knoppix.net :)

This should work since version 3.4 of Knoppix.

Knoppix does exactly what you did do in single mode - as far as I can
see from 
the source ...
