Tried new wi-fi card with Knoppix 3.4 (2nd attempt to send this mail)

I tried my new wi-fi card with Knoppix 3.4. It appeared to recognise the card, but the card didn't start scanning for a connection the way it does under Windows XP. Does Knoppix need the PC and card to be in a hot-spot for it to start scanning for a connection? I wish I knew more about this stuff. Thanks.
