Hello Michael.

Yes, that was the reason. Automatic partitioning already does it like 
that, as Adrian told me. aboot partition must be the first slice as you 
said, and with 1.0 MB is enough (I forgot these details). All done.
Now I'm dusting off other machines like Alphaserver DS10L (21264) and 
AlphaPC LX164 (21164) to test Debian releases on them again.

Very grateful for your great work for the Alpha architecture.
