My thanks to Pete, Andrew, et al. I was able to successfully build a 
working boot medium on a USB stick and later a USB3 HD (and then SSD). I 
tried with a microSD card in a USB adapter, but that didn't seem to 
work, or I missed a step. I was able to create a "live" image using 
Debian Libre Live using the same method.
