Cannot run Debian GNU/Hurd in a VM on MacBook Pro (Intel)

Hi,

I wanted to test out installing Debian GNU/Hurd in a VM on an Intel-based
2017 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro14,1). So I obtained
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/stable/hurd-amd64/debian-hurd-amd64-20250807.img.tar.xz
and extracted it.

Unfortunately, neither in UTM nor in VirtualBox I was able to boot into the
image.

Is KVM currently the only option to test out Debian GNU/Hurd?
