I confirm that I could run a regular debootstrap, with the "brown-tape modification" of /usr/share/debootstrap/functions. Pristine debootstrap still fails with the error about "dpkg [...] --install" with missing package file. Is that situation transient as well? Or shouldn't a change be submitted to debootstrap so that it is no longer needed to patch it this way? Cheers,
