And my RAID controller has firmware 7.24. I did actually have SMP issues
when the firmware version of the RAID controller was too old.

The machine booted fine with "nosmp" with the old RAID firmware though.

Make sure your RAID controller firmware is very recent as well. I think
7.24 was the most recent version that was publicly available.
