Your timing is perfect.  Just today a discussion launched on gentoo lists about whether to stop building mips1 stage tarballs.  So it would seem gentoo at least can provide you a bootstrap environment - for now.  Everyone else has more or less moved on to mips3 or later for their ready to run binaries.  The NetBSD folks do have an HPCMIPS port where the binaries roughly target an R3000 core.
