I experienced this exact problem yesterday when updating my system.
Adrian's instructions match with the commands I ran (as root) to get it
fixed:

umount /boot/grub
apt install hfsprogs
sudo fsck.hfs /dev/sda2
mount /dev/sda2 /boot/grub -o rw
apt upgrade

I used `dmesg | tail` to find why remounting with rw didn't work
initially.
