I'm familiar with U-Boot. The description as a boot loader can be
confusing, because it runs as the firmware. So U-Boot does the same as
OpenFirmware does. It lives in a boot ROM and boot straps the machine.
But it can act as both firmware and boot loader since it can also boot
media directly. I wasn't aware of it being used as a middle man boot
loader and a brief search revealed it can be. But it would likely be too
much work to give an alternate to both GRUB and yaboot.

Another possibility is using the Mac method with a bootable volume you
can chose from the GUI boot menu. But I'm not aware of anyone coding a
way for Linux to do that. Although I had expected it to be used before I
found how PPC Linux boots on a Mac.
