io proverei un DE basato interamente su wayland.

Ad esempio io sto usando labwc... ha qualche pecca e non è completo
al 100%, ma è più che usabile. Infatti è alla versione 0.7.4.
È veloce e occupa pochissima RAM. Io lo uso con Debian testing.
Notare che non ti offre un DE completo, ma devi installare le varie
componenti che ti servono e configurarlo come vuoi usarlo.

Ce ne sono anche altri, ma io non li ho provati.

Xfce sta facendo il passaggio a wayland (non so a che punto sia) e
sta usando proprio labwc per testare le singole parti con wayland.
