Half of your solution works - thanks!

The half that works is where I can go to a console login with ctrl-alt-f2.

But then alt-f1 gives me the boot log and a text console. I cannot co
back to an X screen that works.

On alt-f7 (my local X session) I still have the same windows, but no
response to mouse/keyboard, and
on alt-f8 (a remote X session) there are some buttons that work but
the windows are not filled.

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old  it says:
