Disconnecting helps mouse bettery to last longer. The connection can be reestablished when you touch your mouse again. This is something different: this setting (available in 7, vista and even XP) turns off bluetooth controller when no devices are connected. That means, when your mouse disconnects, BT controller may be turned off. This is apparently what happens to you. You need to avoid powering off BT controller on battery. What BT controller do you have? Are there any settings in system BIOS to avoid BT power saving on battery?
