Jag skulle börja med att prova något i stil med:

strace /etc/init.d/samba start 2>&1 | grep -C 200 --color "textual authentication agent:"

Eventuellt med "-v" till strace för ytterligare detaljer.

Det bör kunna ge ledtrådar till vad som går fel.
