I unplugged the USB connection to the computer, rebooted the UPS, and it 
persists on denying the existence of its batteries.  Every few minutes I 
hear a relay click and it toggles between 100% charge and no batteries 
installed.  I suspect some component is periodically overheating, but 
without a thermal camera good luck finding it.  Heck if I'm going to to 
feel around on a PCB that uses 120VAC.

If an outage happens when it thinks it has batteries, it _might_ do its 
job, but I wouldn't count on it.  A replacement has been ordered, ETA 
later this week. This time I ordered a surge suppressor too, because 
that's how I think this one died.  I live near Tampa.fl.us; lotsa 
lightning here.
