This, in principle, should work, however clunky it is.

You may have reasons to not go this route, but: P5K does have what looks 
like 5 SATA ports. In case any of them are available, that's were the 
SSD would be happier than on USB. There are also PCIe slots, which if 
available, could take in a PCIe-NVMe add-on card.
