Every chance in the world :-) ...

Yep, the server machine that is not booting does not have that package, 
whereas the desktop machine where I did the swap last week does have it.

The server does not have the
   non-free non-free-firmware
repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list. I'll add those (I assume that the 
firmware-amd-graphics package is in non-free-firmware)

When I get a chance to take the server machine out of service (might be a few 
days) I'll add that package, power down, put the AMD card back in, and reboot.
