I don't even understand what you mean there. What do you understand by
"a daemon"? This can have lots of meanings (detached from the TTY?
Running under a "system user", whatever that means?). One of those
may be "the user has no home directory", but this criterion fails
for many users with UID<1000 (which is just a convention itself around
here).

Besides, I gues the program looks itself for the users home, and the ~/
notation in the man page is just a shorthand (usually it's the shell
which expands that).
