This is not a very unusual point of view. GNOME 3 is widely unpopular
and Ubuntu's take on it, Unity, which is based on Gtk3 & GNOME 3
libraries but resembles Mac OS X, is also not widely admired. It has
alienated people to the extent that the dead GNOME 2 project has been
revived and forked, under the name Maté:

GNOME 3 has also been modified to create the more traditional,
Windows-like Cinnamon desktop from Linux Mint:

KDE 4, meanwhile, alienated a lot of people. (Myself included - I did
not like KDE releases 2 or 3, but I could use them; KDE 4 is a mess of
redundant options, but cannot do simple things like a working
Windows-style vertical taskbar and the irritating "plasma" widgets are
integral and cannot be turned off. (Even Windows 7 allows you to do
this, and indeed, in recent sub-versions, they're off by default.)

KDE 3 too was forked:

For now, I use Unity, but I each successive release grows more
annoying. I am considering a switch myself.

So, yes, I think it is fair to say that people don't like them and
they are not very popular, partly due to size and complexity.
