My ideas about a GOOD GUI (graphical desktop environment) (WM): 1. NO "icons" on the "desk". No need. Superfluous. Enough only a menu (for a hotkey and the right mouse button). 2. All GUI funkctions available with hotkeys. 3. The hotkeys of the WM and all other WM functions are modify-able (personalize-able) in simple text files. 4. No GUI program for the "System settings". All system parameter in the GoboLinux modify-able via editing of the system scripts, rc-files, etc. No need any specialist "Command Center" or "Control Panel" as in the KDE, Gnome... 5. Need only 1 taskbar with a few applets: The speed of the Internet connections up/down, CPU %, memory %, and Clock with date. And 4 virtual desktop. 5. All program need start in maximized window, as default. 6. No need GDM, KDM, etc, the system need start (boot up) to console mode, and the graphical environment available with the "startx". 7. XBindKeys as default available in the installed system. 8. No CapsLock. Unusable. CapsLock need mapped to a "Mod3" extra key for XBindKeys. (See this: xmodmap myxmodmap xmodmap -e 'clear Lock' xmodmap -e 'add Mod3 = Hyper_R' xbindkeys xinput set-int-prop 10 "Evdev Middle Button Emulation" 8 1 and user@Csiszilla:~$ cat myxmodmap | grep "Hyper_R" keycode 66 = Hyper_R NoSymbol Hyper_R ) The above mapping good usable in the XBindKeys. Here are a few example from my .xbindkeysrc: #CapsLock+KurzorFel "amixer set PCM 2+" m:0x30 + c:111 #Mod3 + Up # CapsLock+KurzorLe "amixer set PCM 2-" m:0x30 + c:116 #Mod3 + Down # CapsLock+kurzorjobbra "amixer set Master 5+" m:0x30 + c:114 # CapsLock+kurzorbalra "amixer set Master 5-" m:0x30 + c:113 #MOC progi terminalban (CapsLock+2) "urxvt --background black --foreground green -g 1024x768 -e mocp -T viola_theme" mod3 + c:11 # Terminalemulator "urxvt --background black --foreground green -g 1024X768" Mod3 + a # Kepernyovedo (CapsLock + s) "sleep 2 ; xscreensaver-command -activate" Mod3 + s # Play/Pause (CapsLock+Tab) "mocp -G" Mod3 + c:23 # Previous (CapsLock+0) "mocp -r" Mod3 + 0 # Next (CapsLock+1) "mocp -f" Mod3 + 1 # CapsLock+PrintScreen "import -window root `date +%y%m%d%H%M%S`.png " m:0x30 + c:107 # Firefox (CapsLock+f) "/Programs/Firefox/Current/bin/firefox" Mod3 + f #LibreOffice (CapsLock+w) "/System/Links/Executables/swriter" mod3 + w With XBindKeys no need big, difficult WindowManager.
