USB support is very experimental -- we have never had it officially
supported. I will see how to improve the error messages and to fix the
problems that you have faced.

Could you post a screenshot of the kernel panic message? I am interested in
the messages right before the panic.

We normally ship a .kde directory with a few preferences set. Given that we
were still working on some KDE-related bugs, I didn't want to include that
yet. The next ISO should have some fancier desktop settings.
