I initially created my VM using the "Linux Other (32-bit)" option, so I
created a new VM to try to replicate your setup more precisely. I've been
using VirtualBox 4.3.16; I'll see if upgrading it has any affect on the
gobo LiveCD.

On my system the IDE controller defaulted the type to "PIIX4" - I tried
using PIIX3 and it still booted up fine, but maybe you can try changing
that for a quick trial run.

Do you have any extensions installed for VirtualBox? I have the "Oracle VM
VirtualBox Extension Pack" installed (version 4.2.26-95022).
