We don't expect the legacy paths to go away any time soon, because
it's not really our call, unlike in Windows, where Microsoft controls
the ecosystem and can declare than "from version X onwards, this path
is not available". In Linux we have a diverse ecosystem, and even when
someone tries to come up with a standard (for example, FHS) there's
always someone (for example, us!) coming up with something different.
We can design our system as elegantly as we can, but we don't really
expect the whole world to follow.

The paths in BSD are not that different; it's roughly the same amount
of difference you have between traditional Linux distros.
