Well, not liking it sounds like a good reason not to use
it for your own projects. :)

But Perl isn't stale! Perl 5 is getting regular releases,
and the development mailing list has heavy traffic. The Perl
Foundation is funding ongoing work to maintain and develop
the language. This year we are starting to see more
abilities to integrate perl 5 with the new sister language
referred to as perl 6.  

If anyone wants to know more about recent developments in
the two languages, talks at the recent Fosdem conference are
an excellent resource.

Perl 6 development has taken time, partly because the
demands of the language features have required a number of
CS advances, notably the ability to handle multiple
pluggable grammars.

Of course all languages have strengths and weaknesses.
