.lnk is the windows shortcut to files and folder. It could be adapted on linux via the mount command. .url is shortcut to URL. The files would be visible, the idea is just to hide extension : A file named "test.lnk" will be displayed "test". Just like on Windows. I talk about that here because this is the kind of change that a kernel module could do. This is an ergonomic feature that is missing. Another is the harmonization with Windows names : On Linux, you can name a file with every characters, including TAB or ENTER, this is crazy. Special characters like \ / : * ? " < > | TAB and ENTER should be forbidden. This cause problems when transfering files from Linux to Windows. Compatibility between the 2 systems has to be made if we wanto to incite people to change.
