No. Researched it? Yes. It is extremely powerful for some tasks. It can be more work for others. Pure FP languages are common but niche. OCaml is one of the big ones. MLdonkey (a P2P client) is one of the only remotely mainstream apps entirely written in it. Haskell is more of an academic plaything: http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/1312:_Haskell Impure FP is more widely used: Clojure is growing in the Java community, Scala is not as big yet. The daddy is Lisp, which is both imperative and functional. If you were looking at just one to learn, I'd go for Lisp.
