I have personnally used bootsplash for months
http://www.mdstud.chalmers.se/~doidy/rock/rock-bootsplash.png is a good proof
of that :)

I currenlty use it with my 2.6.9 kernel, patched with the software suspend 2
patch which includes bootsplash
so a solution would be to patch the kernel with both software suspend and 
bootsplash at the same time
I don't know the state of the other implementations and never tried either.
I know there is also an implementation done by the gentoo guys.
