I recently did such a build and noticed that only from stage 5 (3?) on I was able to use remote build nodes, probably because only then the chroot environment is fully functional. Otherwise, especially if the cluster server is different in OS/distribution than the remote nodes, the path's to the compilers might be wrong ...
