I installed makeinfo, and now the binutils and dietlibc errors are gone.
Let's see what happens with the AS thing, when the build process reaches
that point...

Regarding the actual subject of this thread, an idea came to my mind: Would
it be possible to have the build scripts check the requirements on the build
host, or write an additional script doing this? The script could then
provide hints to the user like: "makeinfo is not on your system. It's
usually part of a package called texinfo. Make sure that you have texinfo
installed on your system."

As long as most ROCK build hosts are ROCKs themselves, this is, of course,
not that much of an issue. On the other hand, "comfort" options like this
can help to broaden the user base...

Of course, to write such a script requires to know what exactly it has to
check for. So if anyone is building ROCK on non-ROCK: This is your thread!
Share your knowledge with us! Let us know, what you use as your build host,
and what you had to change or add on your system in order to make it work!

makeinfo is part of the package "texinfo".  SuSE has it, here's a link
for for the source RPM (9.1 binaries don't seem to be online
yet):

You should have the binary on your DVD, though.
