In this case my guess is that kpilot is broken. Try the following:

1) attach palm
2) press hotsync on palm
3) exec the following:

$ pilot-xfer -p /dev/usb/tts/0 -b "Backup_`date +%Y%m%d`"

4) Let me know if this works :-)
