/etc/DOMAINNAME should be the key to your problem.

`domainname` should give you the currently set domain. i'm running some
older rock-versions as nis servers without major problems.

ypbind init script should set the domainname (using /bin/domainname and
/etc/DOMAINNAME).

/var/yp/`domainname`/etc contains the tables...
