I believe the problem is already in there (if I'm wrong please correct me).
Glibc 2.3 can only be compiled with an gcc release greater or equal than 
gcc 3.x.
So if you want to use a system with a gcc 2.x you only can use glibc 
2.2.5. If yo want to compile a glibc 2.3.x than you need a gcc 3.x 
compiler to do that.
