Same here.  Current production is 2.4.20 with a bunch of patches
(ext3, VFS lock, big uid quota, ...).  I had not seen this prior to 2.4.20
though...  I've tested Alans aacraid driver from 2.4.21-ac2 with the
same results.

no, sounds very similar.  The only differences would be what I'm using
to generate load, multiple bonnie++...
