RE: Dell2650/Perc 3Di: another victim

This thread started in April with the subject of kernel: aacraid: Host
adapter reset request. SCSI hang ? 

Firmware 3157 on the 2650 had increased the timeout on the high priority
flush operations from 6 to 60 seconds (aprox). The Firmware fix is to reduce
the priority of the flush operation, but will take some time to propagate
into release. The Driver workaround (notice my choice of words ;-> ) is to
be patient with the firmware when a SCSI reset operation has been requested
to deal with a command timeout.

It is a rare problem that occurs for specific targets, motherboard CPU
speeds and kernel configurations. But when it happens, the pain was most
certainly unbearable.

What versions are having problems with these controllers?  All versions
of RedHat?  Also what versions of PERC are affected?  I must have been
asleep for awhile I havn't heard anything about this.

To compile a module based on the sources I am providing, on a RedHat
kernel
source tree, perform the following steps. Your mileage will
necessarily
vary, I tried my best to set up a cookbook to just build the module
rather
than going through the strain of building *everything*. If anyone has
corrections, do not feel timid, tell us before `just enough information

do oneself some harm' happens!

VERS is the kernel version, eg: RH7.3 is 2.4.18-3 etc
KERNVERS is the kernel version minus the EXTRAVERSION eg: RH7.3 is
2.4.18
DOWNLOADDIR is where you placed the aacraid driver source tarball
AACVERS is the aacraid driver version (eg 1.1.4-2256)
CONFIG is your specific configuration (eg: i686-smp)
SUBCONFIG is your sub configuration (eg: smp)
You can use your favorite editor, I placed the `ed' interaction for a
RH7.3
kernel, the idea is to make sure that the EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile
matches the kernel module you need to build.

# cd /usr/src/linux-VERS/drivers/scsi
# rm -rf aacraid
# tar -zxf DOWNLOADDIR/aacraid-AACVERS.tgz
# cd ../..
# make mrproper
# cp configs/kernel-KERNVERS-CONFIG.config .config
# ed Makefile

EXTRAVERSION = -3custom
s/custom/SUBCONFIG/p
w

# echo x | make menuconfig
# make dep
# make SUBDIRS=drivers/scsi/aacraid modules

Then do a mkinitrd to set up the appropriate initrd image ... cross
you
fingers that you do not have a pile of mudd when you are finished (it
may be
a good idea to make a backup copy of the initrd image ;-> ).

I *really* hope this helps, distributing the all-seeing-all-knowing
prebuild
rpm modules is a 14MB file. I do not have the resources, or the
permission,
to provide those in a manner that would be timely enough to satisfy (1
month
+ matrix testing).

I'm one of the many victims of the aacraid timeouts/crashes on a
PE2650/Perc
3Di.
It seems that using a non-SMP kernel alleviates the problem for me but
is
is not a solution.
We are in process to migrate all servers in our company from HP to
Dell
and this issue is a big problem.
I'm not a kernel-compiling-fan, but I'm more an rpm-installer: I'd
like
to see on official RPM update from Redhat.
In any case, I can also try the kernel-compiling way... I downloaded
the
patch from Mark but I'm not able to compile it as module: do I need to
recompile
the whole kernel?
