We've been running the 2.6 kernels in production for some time now. With Debian you can just backport binutils and modutils from unstable into stable and have a "stable" install with 2.6. Haven't had any lockup problems but then again the machines that are in production aren't nearly under the load that our 2.4 boxes are.
