We disabled the PERC3/DI ROMB (raid on motherboard) and now are using the "plain" SCSI controller (AIC7899 Ultra160 SCSI adapter) in combination with the Linux software RAID implementation under RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0. It turned out that this configuration is much more stable. Also the RAID5 performance seems to be much more better.
