Thank you anyway for your suggestions, as soon as I am near the 2.6.7 box, I'll try again. However, I still can't get my USB adapter to work, as it doesn't get recognized properly - I don't even get a USB device ... (vend/prod xxx/yyy) is not claimed by any active driver. as suggested in the Berlios FAQ, but only a lame kernel: usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using address 6 But I guess that's a little bit off topic here, I'll have to ask somewhere else for hotplug configuration with Debian.
