Can't compile with Kernel 2.6.7 Makefile error 127

Hello,

I'm  going to set up my Atmel USB adapter to work with my Desktop at 
work(Gentoo 2004.2 + 2.6.7)
Ive downloaded latest CVS snapshotm but can't compile it. It reports 
error as follows:

bash-2.05b# make
co  Makefile,v Makefile
make: co: Command not found
make: *** [Makefile] Error 127

Pls help resolving the problem.
