   Well, that was yesterday.

    Today, I replaced the "host" mobo (a socket7 with a k6-2-500 that I 
bought
years ago from a company which no longer exists) with a time-tested va-503+
and a k6-3-380 -- and the "problem" is gone!

   Live and learn.
