	I can't remember if 1 or -1 turns on the debugging.  Since I don't have that machine on I can't look but modinfo on at76c503* (or whichever other module) will tell you the parms.
	Are you compiling this as root?  Since make fails early on and in a root readable directory that could be a possible problem.
	My other guess would be that some option is not set correctly in your kernel config or Gentoo adds a patch (if you are not using a plain old kernel from kernel.org).  I can provide you with my config if you'd like.
