Trouble getting Netgear MA101 USB adapter working

I've been trying to get this driver to work under a Debian system for
almost a month now with no luck.  I'm currently using Ubuntu 5.04,
with the 2.6.10 kernel.  For ease, of installation, I downloaded the
following files from the Debian repository:

It was pretty simple unpacking these files using dpkg, and I thnk they
went to the appropriate places.  After unpacking at76c503a-source, a
.tar.gz file was copied to /usr/src, which I unzipped.  After that, I
got the source code installed under /usr/src/modules/at76c503a (which
I thnk is the correct place).  I built the package with no errors, and

After that was done, I just plugged in the USB adapter and I get the

Which doesn't mke much sense since the firmware is already installed
from the atmel-firmware package I got from the Debian repository.  So
I go and check what are the files under /lib/hotplug/firmware, and the
atmel_at76c503a-rfmd.bin isn't there.  Here's a list if you want to

The modules actually load, and if I do lsmod I see them on the list. 
But if I do "iwconfig" I only get "lo", "eth0", and "sit0", but no
"wlan0".  All three of those say "no wireless extensions."

Can anyone help me out with this?  I've tried getting help everywhere.
 This the only place I haven't looked for help.  I'd really like to
get this working because this is the only thing that is holding me
from install linux on my main system (I do all the testing on one
computer, so that I don't mess what I have on my other computer).
