For completeness, my particular device falls into the category
"NOT_SO_very_rare",
so everything is copacetic, the device still works on the Win machine
despite (or should I say because of) the Berlios firmware.  Thanks again.

Unfortunately, I might have run into another problem - now that the driver loads successfully.
Despite my best attempts (maybe not good enough, though) I haven't yet managed to iwconfig the device to the point where the wireless gets off the ground.
In case I haven't exhausted all the possibilities and it has something to do with the unsettling warning,
