In order to find the reason for missing your AP,
please set module param debug=0x104003 for at76c503.o (either by
modprobe/insmod or in /etc/modules.conf), plug-in your device and
post your syslog again - it should contain more lines.

I'd also be interested in your syslog with debug=-1 for the system hang
(using usb-uhci) - try to switch to pseudo terminal 10 to watch it before
you plug-in the WLAN device. usb-uhci worked fine here with 2.4.23 and a
SMC2662W-AR :-/
